The impact of roads on Feng Shui

Thousands of years ago, when Feng Shui was first practiced, ancient Feng Shui masters searched for flowing water when identifying the optimal location to locate a house. Rivers and streams were known as the veins of the earth that carried positive chi. Today, in our more urban environments, roads and pathways, as well as water, are the main carriers of chi and Feng Shui masters now look at the roads around your home to see if they are beneficial to your home.

When it comes to roads, the ideal site for a house is one where the road curves around the property, giving the impression of hugging the house. This allows chi to flow naturally and harmoniously around your environment. Paths, being man-made, tend to support yang energy and therefore to balance yin energy, the path should curve gently towards the house without being too straight or too wide. Unfortunately, we have very little control over how our developers have designed our local roads, so you’ll be pleased and reassured to know that there are few road problems that can’t be fixed quickly and easily. Below I have highlighted the most common problems experienced with roads and share with you some very simple tips for harmonizing the energy in your immediate surroundings if you have roads around your property that are not conducive to positive chi.

Roads too straight.

Paths that are too straight cause the energy to move too fast and go through the entire house. If your house is on a very straight street, especially if your house is situated in the middle of a straight stretch of street, you will need to slow down the energy to encourage it to flow onto your property. One of the best ways to slow down the chi is to grow natural plants in front of your property. If you have the space for a large garden this can be as simple as making sure your garden is filled with large plants, if you don’t have the space then hanging baskets or tubs filled with plants can work just as well. As energy moves fast in this type of environment, you will need to promote a sense of calm, so evergreens with pale flowers will work best.

traveled roads

Busy roads are full of yang energy that can disturb the flow of positive and balanced chi. If your home is located on a busy street, you will need to slow down the power. Again, a large number of evergreens or pale flowering plants should be planted at the front of your property. If you don’t have outside space, then filling your street-facing windows with plants will work just as well.

A road that leads away from your house

If the road turns away from your house, and especially if it turns sharply, chi can enter your house in sharp, jerky bursts. This can lead the occupants to live very disruptive lives, often with severe ups and downs. If this is like your home, you will want to create a barrier at the point where the road begins to bend away from your property to prevent chi from entering your home too quickly. To encourage the inflow of harmonious chi, you should hang a wind chime in front of your home, either by the door or door. When you hang a wind chime outside your driveway, you need to keep the direction of your home in mind. If you are facing east or south you should hang a wooden chime, for properties that are facing west or north you should use a metal chime.

A house facing a T-junction

If your house faces a T-junction, then power may be reaching your house too fast. This means that if nothing is done to counter this, your home may have too much yang energy causing an imbalance. A home that is filled with too much yang energy can create disharmony in the home and cause conflicts and arguments. To prevent this, you should create some sort of low barrier in front of your house, best a low hedge or fence. It is important that the barrier does not prevent the chi from entering completely, so it should be built at shoulder height or have a small gap.

A secondary problem with a house facing a T-junction is that T-junctions can cause poison arrows. Poison arrows are sharp corners that point towards your house and in this case are caused by street corners. To disguise poison arrows aimed at your house, plant a tall tree or shrub directly in the arrow’s line of sight. If this is not possible, hanging a small mirror outside your home facing the corner will have the effect of deflecting any negative chi.

A house at the end of a dead end

Chi can build up at the end of a dead end and cause it to stagnate. A house that is at the end of a cul-de-sac will often not benefit from the positive chi flowing into the house. If your house is at the end of a cul-de-sac, you need to find a way to keep the chi moving. The best way to do this is to add moving objects to the front of your house or front lawn. Windchimes, pinwheels, and flags are beneficial additions to the front of your home. Alternatively, moving water can also be an excellent enhancement, so a small water feature at the front of your property will also be very beneficial.

roadless

Some houses, especially terrace rows or cottages, are not built on a road, but are set back from the road by a small path or lane. If this is the case, then it is very important that you stimulate the chi in the front of your house to attract it into your home. This can be done by adding brightly colored plants and flowers to the entrance and adding moving objects like wind chimes and pinwheels.

In all cases, to promote positive chi to flow from the driveway into your home, you should have a gently curving path leading to your front door, your driveway should be elegant and well maintained and kept clear to provide a welcoming view of your home.
