The biggest cause of snoring: obesity

Obesity and being overweight are the cause or the worsening of almost all diseases or health conditions.

The main cause of snoring, and snoring is a symptom of many health conditions, is obesity. There are other causes, smoking, drinking, sleeping pills and others, but without a doubt being overweight is the main cause.

As the body becomes overweight, fat deposits develop in various areas of the body and the neck is no exception. Excess fatty and flaccid tissue within the nasal cavities offers such obstruction. The condition is even worse when the obese person lies on their back to sleep, as the front of the neck is a prime site for excess fat and fluid to accumulate and the weight of this crushes the airways.

Snoring occurs when air struggles to force its way through airways obstructed by excess fatty and flaccid tissue.

While many people think of snoring as inconvenient or a bit noisy, it can be more serious. Snoring is your body’s way of crying out for the air it needs to perform its basic functions. Real snoring is your body trying to force air through blockages, if the underlying cause is obesity then the direct cause is loose tissue and weakened muscles in your neck, preventing you from breathing properly. Snoring can also cause sore throats, headaches, and a dry mouth in the morning.

There have also been many studies on “marital arousal syndrome,” the name given to the problem of a spouse who snores and wakes their partner. Spousal arousal syndrome can account for up to 1 hour of lost sleep per night for non-snorers. If obesity is the cause of your snoring problem, it should now be clear to you that snoring is not a simple matter. Proper diet and exercise can eliminate all these problems and consequences from your life and the lives of your loved ones.

Also, “regular” snoring can be a precursor to sleep apnea, a very serious sleep disorder. Sleep apnea is a temporary interruption of breathing due to a blocked airway like snoring, except more severe. People with sleep apnea may wake up in the middle of the night, gasping for breath. This affects a person’s sleep patterns, causing tiredness, irritability, headaches upon waking, a dry mouth and throat, and an inability to concentrate during the day.

Do what you have to do to stop the snoring problem.

Fortunately, there is a way to stop many obesity-associated snoring problems: weight loss and exercise.

If you are overweight, you need to reduce your daily calorie intake and work hard on a diet that will help you lose that extra weight. A man only needs to be twenty percent overweight to have a nighttime snoring problem. He will lose weight and will probably lose his snoring.

Another solution to help reduce nocturnal frequency is to not have a heavy or too rich or greasy meal later in the evening. But be careful when making any dietary changes. Make sure you’re not only eliminating your snoring triggers, but still eating healthy and eating plenty of fruits and vegetables.

Certain foods are also known to increase the chances of snoring, while other foods have a reputation for helping to decrease the noise of snoring. Many find dairy products i.e. milk, yogurt, ice cream, etc. to be one of the foods that cause increased snoring. An alternative to milk is soy or rice milk.
