Side Effects of Krill Oil and Fish Oil – Revealing the Hidden Truth

With so much media hype about the importance of omega-3 fatty acids for healthy living, various supplements such as fish oil and krill oil have become household names. However, are there any side effects of krill oil and fish oil? If so, how can they be avoided? Read on to find out.

You may be surprised to learn that krill oil or fish supplements have no side effects. The side effects you might have heard about or accelerated are due to the poor quality of the oil (krill or fish) you have consumed.

Mediocre Oil Side Effects

1. Long lasting metallic aftertaste.
This happens if the oil you have consumed is stagnant. Both fish and krill are prone to oxidation. If they were mishandled before the oil could be extracted from them, the derived oil is rancid.

The freshness of the oil can be checked by opening a soft gel and smelling it. Fresh oil smells only of sea water.

2. Nausea, headache, diarrhea and upset stomach
These are all symptoms of consuming toxins. Due to polluted ocean waters, aquatic life also tends to accumulate these harmful toxins. If proper refining techniques were not used while the oil was being extracted, the toxins are carried into the oil.

Krill do not accumulate many toxins compared to fish due to their low position in the food chain. However, fish supplements that have undergone the molecular distillation process have high levels of purity.

Now that you know that the so-called side effects of krill oil and fish oil are actually due to substandard oil quality, your next step should be to choose only premium supplements.

Of the krill and fish supplements, I personally prefer the latter. This is because krill supplements are expensive and contain less, only 9% DHA, while fish supplements contain 25% DHA. Therefore, you will need to take more krill gels compared to fish gels to reach the desired levels of DHA in the body (a daily intake of 500 mg of DHA is recommended).

Typically, a bottle of krill oil containing 60 gels of 500mg oil each costs $27, while a bottle of fish oil containing 60 gels of 1000mg oil each costs $17.

Both of these facts prove that you will have to shell out more dollars each month if you plan to stick to krill supplements to make up for the DHA deficiency in the body. Its heavy on the pocket nature can be treated as one of the side effects of krill oil.

The fish supplement, on the other hand, gives you more DHA per dollar and is light on the pocketbook.
